Our History

1848          Caldew House in Cumbria, England

James Laing and his wife built their home, Caldew House in Cumbria, England, marking the beginning of the Laing business in the UK.              

1959          Britain's first motorway

On time and to budget, the new M1 motorway through England was opened after a mammoth 19-month road-building project.

1978          R O'Rourke & Son Ltd

R O'Rourke and Son was formed, with offices in east London. The first job was a £2300 precast frame for Foundation House in Bracknell, England.

1992          Barcelona Olympics

O'Rourke's first contract in Europe was for the Barcelona Olympics, building the Hotel Villa Olympica - a £9.5m contract.

2001          Laing O'Rourke

O'Rourke plc and Laing Construction plc joined forces - and the strengths and expertise of the two companies were combined to form a single company the following year.

2001          Channel Tunnel Rail Link

Work commenced on the transformation of St Pancras, to include 13 new platforms and accommodate the new high-speed rail link.

2002          Work Commences on Heathrow Terminal 5

Heathrow Airport's new Terminal 5 is currently the largest construction project in Europe and Laing O'Rourke has been entrusted with the delivery of the project, along with other BAA partners.

2003          New Headquarters

Our new headquarters opened in Dartford, England using our own Customised Office Solution, offering faster design and construction, while maintaining choice and quality.

2003         Dubai International Airport

Working in joint venture with our local partners, Al-Naboodah-Laing O'Rourke become responsible for the engineering procurement and construction of the new third terminal substructure at one of the busiest airports in the world, to be operational by 2008.

2004          Laing O'Rourke Australia

Laing O'Rourke Australia starts operations across the property markets of both NSW and Queensland, focusing on a diverse range of developments including residential, commercial, industrial and mixed use.

2006          Laing O'Rourke Australia and Asia Hub

Laing O'Rourke purchases Barclay Mowlem and building on this inheritance of a strong Australian heritage and multi-disciplined capability across the building, rail, civil, marine, power, and mine infrastructure sectors - Laing O'Rourke is positioned to grow across the Group hub of Australia and Asia.
