Apprentices and trainees represent the future for Laing O'Rourke. Just as we are continually designing and building better roads, bridges, railways and buildings so too are we building better tradespeople.
We offer a diverse range of apprenticeships and traineeship programs across a number of locations throughout Australia each year.
An apprenticeship is a structured four-year program of on-the-job experience, supported by training at TAFE to cover the theory components of the trade.
An apprenticeship can be the first step in an onward career path. It can be a viable alternative to tertiary studies, with your career (and pay cheque) starting from day one.
How Apprenticeships Work
Apprenticeships are based on competencies. A competency means that you are able to carry out a certain task or combination of tasks both in theory and practice, to an established standard.
For an apprentice to achieve the competencies needed to qualify, they must compete both off-the-job and on-the-job training.
Off-the-job training provides the theoretical knowledge to transfer onto the job. An apprentice will go to a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as a TAFE to acquire this knowledge.
On-the-job training provides the apprentice with the opportunity to use the information they attained at the RTO and apply it practically, to established standards as evaluated in the workplace by qualified assessors.
To achieve a competency, an apprentice has to be successful in both off-the-job training and on-the-job training.
To get the right on-the-job training, you may be required to travel and work at various Laing O'Rourke sites away from your normal home base for extended periods in your second, third and fourth year of training. In these cases, your travel and accommodation (if required) will be arranged for you.
An important part of your training is about how to work cooperatively with other people in a safe manner. It's about having the right attitudes to solve problems and communicate with team members. On the job Mentors will assist you with that training.
Your apprenticeship will help you to use your head as well as your hands to prepare you for the demands of the skilled workforce required in tomorrow's industry.
Periodically throughout the year, Laing O'Rourke seeks applicants who are interested in trades including:
- carpentry
- mechanical fitter
- boiler maker
- design engineer
- pipe fitters

- pressure / coded welders
- plumbers
